About

Preston Haddan is a dedicated historian, retired college educator, and former mayor of Coffeyville, Kansas, with a lifelong passion for uncovering and preserving historical narratives. With over 30 years of academic research experience, he has spent countless hours investigating forgotten stories, verifying historical accounts, and piecing together lost chapters of American history. His deep interest in 20th-century American history, law enforcement, and government affairs has driven his meticulous research, culminating in Notorious Southtown, his first published book.

Born and raised in Coffeyville, Kansas, Haddan developed an early fascination with history through the stories passed down by his family. His grandfather, born in the 1880s, frequently shared firsthand accounts of South Coffeyville’s criminal past, including encounters with the infamous outlaw Pretty Boy Floyd. His father, a well-known local photographer, also contributed to his knowledge with countless tales of the town’s hidden underground world. These personal connections, combined with his professional background and research expertise, fueled his mission to document the once-thriving criminal underbelly of South Coffeyville before it was lost to time.

Haddan’s work stands apart for its dedication to accuracy and authenticity. He combed through old newspaper articles, official records, and firsthand testimonies to bring to life the untold history of Southtown. Now residing in Springfield, Missouri, he continues his passion for historical research and is currently planning his next book, which will explore the unique experiences of growing up as a “baby boomer” in Southeast Kansas.
